WAG – ‘The Chemistry of Wine’ – Chapter 9: Vin Jaune, Iodine, Lychee & Gewürztraminer, Calories, Carbonic Maceration with John Manley

1st October 2025 - 19:00 to 22:00

We are delighted to welcome back knowledgeable Club Member John Manley for the next chapter in his fascinating Chemistry of Wine series.

This session explores the unique world of Vin Jaune, a rare and distinctive wine from the Jura region of France, made from the Savagnin grape. Often described as a love-it-or-hate-it wine, its production shares similarities with Sherry (though it is unfortified) and develops flavours reminiscent of Champagne.

  • Alongside Vin Jaune, John will guide us through a series of intriguing topics:
  • Iodine in wine – its surprising sources, beyond the traditional links with Chablis.
  • Lychee & Gewürztraminer – the aromatic chemistry behind their iconic flavours.
  • Calories in wine – why dry whites aren’t always the ‘lighter’ option.
  • Carbonic Maceration – the science behind Beaujolais Nouveau’s bright, youthful style.

As always, the talk will be accompanied by a selection of wine tastings to illustrate the discussion. The evening concludes at 8.15pm with a light buffet and wines from the bar.

Price: £27.00 per person
