WAG – ‘The Chemistry of Wine’ – Chapter 8: Synthetic Wines & Stereochemistry with John Manley Part 2

20th August 2025 - 19:00 to 22:00

Following the success of John Manley’s fascinating Part 1 talk in June, and in response to popular demand, The Clifton Club is delighted to host Part 2 on Wednesday 20th August 2025 – a chance for those who missed out to join this intriguing journey into the world of synthetic wines.

Led once again by knowledgeable Club Member John Manley, this talk offers a captivating and accessible exploration into the science behind synthetic wines – faithful reproductions crafted by precisely blending the chemical components of specific vintages.

While the concept may appear straightforward, the underlying process reveals a surprising level of complexity. John will delve into how even subtle differences in molecular structure can dramatically influence flavour, aroma, and how wine interacts with the human body.

Far from the “Frankenwine” stigma, synthetic wines may offer real-world benefits – and could be at the forefront of wine innovation. But how close are we to recreating a Chateau Latour 1961? Join us for a thought-provoking session of wine science with a twist.

The evening includes wine tastings during the talk and concludes with a light buffet and wines from the bar from 8.15pm.

Please book online, or by contacting our Club Office on reservations@thecliftonclub.co.uk or calling 0117 974 5039.
