WAG – ‘The Chemistry of Wine’ – Chapter 8: Synthetic Wines & Stereochemistry with John Manley

25th June 2025 - 19:00 to 22:00

The Clifton Club invites members to an intriguing and accessible exploration into the world of Synthetic Wines – a topic that may sound technical, but promises fascinating surprises.

Led by knowledgeable Club Member, John Manley, this talk delves into the science behind creating synthetic wines – faithful reproductions made by blending the exact chemical components of a specific vintage. While the concept may seem straightforward, the process is full of unexpected complexity, particularly when it comes to molecular structure. Discover how subtle differences in molecular shape can have dramatic effects on flavour, aroma, and interaction with the human body.

Far from the “Frankenwine” label, synthetic wines could offer genuine benefits – and the future of wine innovation may be closer than we think. But how close are we to replicating a Chateau Latour 1961? This is wine science with a twist.

The evening includes wine tastings during the talk and concludes with a light buffet and wines from the bar from 8.15pm.
