Samir has been Chief Executive of St George’s, Bristol since September 2021. He will talk about the joys and challenges of running a charity which has music and spoken word at its core but also has to succeed as a business and philanthropic entity.

He will reflect on recent experience, with the opening of an award-winning extension at St George’s and the journey through the pandemic, and also look to the future, unveiling plans for the coming season and the 200th anniversary celebrations in 2023.

St George’s Bristol

St George’s is a historic venue at the heart of Bristol’s cultural scene.  It welcomes acclaimed artists from all over the world and works with community groups much closer to home.  In August 2022 it will host the first ever BBC Prom to happen in Bristol.  Samir Savant has been Chief Executive since last September.  He will talk about the joys and challenges of running a charity which has music and spoken word at its core but also has to succeed as a business and philanthropic entity.  He will reflect on recent experience, with the opening of an award-winning extension at St George’s and the journey through the pandemic, and also look to the future, unveiling plans for the coming season and the 200th anniversary celebrations in 2023.

 

Samir Savant – biography (202 words)

 

Samir has been Chief Executive of St George’s, Bristol since September 2021.   St George’s is a world-class, independent music and spoken word venue in the heart of Bristol.  The 580-seat concert hall was converted from a Georgian church, and is a cherished space which welcomes the internationally acclaimed artists alongside local community groups.

 

Samir has over 20 years’ experience in the arts.  He was most recently Festival Director of the London Handel Festival and previously held senior fundraising and marketing positions at Shakespeare’s Globe, English National Opera, Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal College of Music.

 

Samir is a recognised writer and public speaker on topics ranging from the lack of diversity in the arts to the role of trustees in fundraising.  From 2015 to 2018, he chaired the Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s Cultural Sector Network’s national conference, the largest event of its type in Europe for arts and heritage fundraisers, and is currently the mentoring lead on the executive committee.

 

Outside of work, he is an active choral and solo singer and founded the prize-winning chamber choir, Pegasus.  He is a trustee of the Harrison Parrott Foundation, which seeks to redress the inequalities of opportunity in the classical music sector.
