Kelvin Grove Club Member Review - Julian Telling
In January and February this year (2020) during our usual annual trip to Cape Town we visited the Kelvin Club. Jonathan had given us a letter of introduction which I took to reception and was given a temporary membership card valid for the month we were in the Cape.
The Club itself is, not unsurprisingly, very colonial and quite grand. It is very much a country club with lovely grounds set under table mountain and next door to the world famous Newlands cricket ground. The club is large with outdoor tennis courts and bowling lawns with buildings around a large outdoor swimming pool, there are also squash courts. There is a very large and well equipped gym and if exercise is all too much of an effort there is plethora of eateries. A casual cafe selling drinks, light lunches and home made cakes, a wonderful sushi and champagne bar with fresh sushi prepared in front of you. Food can also be served at the poolside where there is also a bar and restaurant. The main building has a fine dining restaurant which is open every day and on Sundays produces a quintessentially English lunch. For those who like wine it is both excellent and amazing value.
The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff are very helpful. I understand the club has over 3000 members but due to its size is certainly never too busy.
Definitely worth a visit.
