The History of The Clifton ClubThe Clifton Club has been our name since the founding of the Clifton Club Rooms in 1818. The original proprietor-members would stroll through Birdcage Walk towards their new club premises, which were located close to the parish church of St. Andrew's. The original club closed, but was resurrected by some surviving members at the current location in The Mall in 1856. The reins were formally handed over to the Clifton Club Company in 1882.
The architect for the building was Francis Greenaway who spent time in Newgate prison, Bristol awaiting trial for forgery. He was sentenced to be hanged but this was later commuted to transportation to Australia where he became famous as the Father of Australian Architecture .
