Modern Medicine in 45 Minutes

10 November 2017

First in a series of morning Medical talks on various relevant subjects. Each session will be delivered by a very knowledgeable expert in their field. Join fellow Members for coffee from 11am, talk starts at 11.30, those inattendance are welcome to stay on at The Club for lunch.

New Teeth For Old

Dr Adrian Watkinson MDS. FDSRCS. DRD RCS. BChD, Consultant Senior Lecturer at Bristol Dental School will be delivering a 45 minute talk on the ways in which Dental Implants can improve the Quality of Life.

Since qualifying as a Dental Surgeon, Adrian Watkinson has been awarded several Fellowships and diplomas together with a research degree from the University of Bristol. Whilst teaching at the Dental School, he began pioneering work in placing dental implants in 1988. He later established one of the first dental implant clinics at Litfield House and later at The Smile Suite in Trafalgar House, both on the Promenade, Clifton. Since then he has carried out over 2500 implant operations. As a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, he has lectured widely in Europe and North America. This talk will look at the ways in which implants have evolved to become the preferred way of replacing teeth - be it a single missing tooth to complete tooth replacement.

Film Club - Slumdog Millionaire

Directed by Danny Boyle

Set and filmed in India, it is a loose adaptation of the novel Q & A (2005) by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup, telling the story of Jamal Malik, age 18, from the Juhu slums of Mumbai. As a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? who is able to answer every stage correctly, he is accused of cheating. Jamal recounts his history, illustrating how he is able to answer each question.

Supper will be served from 6.30 pm with the film starting at 7.45pm prompt.

Speakers Lunch - November Sian Flynn

‘Lock ‘em up or let ‘em out?’ An insight into the workings of the Parole Board.

Sian has worked in the public service for many years, having been a councillor, member of a health authority, Chairman of a hospital, and a school governor. Professionally, for twenty years she worked as a fundraiser in the arts. For the last twelve years I have been an independent member of the Parole Board of England and Wales, and undertake the full range of the work of the Board. I also currently sit as a Tribunal member with the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

Christmas Fair

Following the success of last years' fair, the Club will again be hosting a Christmas Fair.  The Club is a wonderous place to be in the festive season and this event is sure to put you and your guests in the Christmas spirit!

There will be plenty of stalls for purchasing gifts and the £3 entry will be donated to The Marmalade Trust, one of our elected charities.

Members and reciprocal Members are encoraged to bring guests along, even if only for a few hours.

Candlelight Dinner

An intimate dinner with an eclectic mix of seasonal poems, music and readings offered by Members throughout the course of the evening.  Booking is strongly advised and will be on a strictly first come first served basis as availability is limited.  Those attending are encouraged to contribute to the proceedings if indeed they wish to.  

Dinner comprises of a 3 course menu and coffee for £35.00 pp, drinks not included.  Timings are 7.00pm for 7.30pm, Dress Code: Black Tie.

Christmas Cocktail Party

The Club Christmas Cocktail Party is a fabulous opportunity for Members and their guests to get into the Christmas spirit!

Canapes, cocktails and champagne will be served between 6.30pm and 8pm. This event is very popular with Members of all ages and offers excellent value at £28.50 per head. Members are limited to bring 6 guests per Member.

Film Club - Starter for 10

Set in 1985, Brian Jackson (James McAvoy), a working-class youth from Essex, gets a chance to prove himself when he is accepted to respected Bristol University. As Brian navigates his way through his first year there, he finds romance with two pretty students (Alice Eve, Rebecca Hall) and tries out for a popular TV program called "University Challenge."

Christmas Members Lunch

Arriving at 12.30pm to be seated at 1pm, Members can look forward to a three course tradiational Christmas Lunch with Wine whilst enjoying some festive entertainment.

A highlight on the Club calender, this lunch is booking up fast so book early to avoid disapointment.

This lunch is an event for Members only. The cost is £37.50 per person.  Please contact the office to book.
